The Entrepreneurship Hub can look back on a successful Indo-German High-Tech Start-up Camp: from May 21 to 28, people interested in founding a company from India and the Technische Universität Braunschweig came together to develop creative ideas and visions in multinational teams.
They presented their inspiring business ideas in final pitches to a jury of experts on May 28, 2024. Two of the innovative business ideas plan to apply for an EXIST start-up grant with the support of TU Braunschweig in the next step.
As part of the Indo-German High-Tech Start-up Camp, the participants received valuable expertise from coaches and interactive workshops organized by the Start2 group. They were given important insights and strategies for the international success of their start-up ideas.
The participants networked with representatives from the regional start-up ecosystem from the Institute for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (IWF), the Entrepreneurship Hub, the International House, and the Protohaus, as well as regional start-ups such as Gaia Aerospace and BeSu.Solutions, who provided valuable insights into their work. They got to know Braunschweig as a start-up location and met the Lord Mayor, Thorsten Kornblum.
The event was an outstanding example of promoting innovation and entrepreneurship through international cooperation and knowledge exchange.
The international participants came from the universities and research institutions: Birla Institute of Technology & Science Pilani (BITS Pilani) | Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) | Centre for Cellular and Molecular Platforms (C-CAMP) | Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT)
The jury included Prof. Dr. Reza Asghari, Head of the Entrepreneurship Hub | Philipp Grimmel from the start-up Papa Fuego | Runak Sabbar, Project Coordinator of the High-Tech Incubator/Accelerator (HTIA) Smart Mobility
The Indo-German High-Tech Start-up Camp took place as part of an EXIST-funded project International TechKnowlogy Entrepreneurship (INTEKNO) and was organized by the Entrepreneurship Hub and the Institute for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (IWF) at TU Braunschweig.
From September 4th to 8th, 2023, around 30 international entrepreneurial enthusiasts took part in the International Entrepreneurship Summer School (IESS). Students, researchers and young academics came together virtually to work together on entrepreneurial solutions to societal challenges.
The participants from India, Turkey, Cameroon, the United Kingdom, Lithuania, Pakistan, Iran, and Germany gained in-depth insights into the world of high-tech entrepreneurship within one week. They attended lectures by start-up experts and, with the support of coaches from the Entrepreneurship Hub, worked on business models for innovative start-up ideas in multinational teams.
The invited speakers in 2023 were once again international and diverse. Among them were Serhii Serhiienko and Kateryna Kopishynska from the “Kyiv Polytechnic Institute Igor Sikorsky” in Ukraine, as well as Ashnie Badal from the Science Discovery Zone at Toronto Metropolitan University. Additionally, there were lectures from successful founder Mali M Baum, project manager Raven Brooks from the start-up Oxolo, Alina Zukic, program manager at German Accelerator, Ralf Geishauser from the Business Angel Network Niedersachsen (BANSON), and Dr. Lena Oesterlin-Meret from Startup Niedersachsen. Furthermore, there was a workshop by Lea Feldhaus, Leonie Bahl, and Hemanth Mandapati from Young Entrepreneurs in Science.
As part of a final pitch event, the teams presented their developed business models before an expert jury. The presented start-up ideas included a concept for an AI-supported food sharing app, a research project in the field of bio- and nanotechnology to develop an alternative to antibiotics, and a concept for the use of drones for food delivery.
This year’s jury consisted of Dr. Aparna Rao (Associate Professor at NMIMS Navi Mumbai, Head of the Entrepreneurship Cell), Stephanie Reimann (Head of Global Venturing & Startup Collaborations at Volkswagen AG), and Klaus Lange (Board Member and Business Angel from the Business Angel Network Southeast Lower Saxony – Banson e.V.). These renowned entrepreneurship experts provided valuable feedback to the teams of international entrepreneurial enthusiasts and encouraged them to continue working on their promising research projects and business models.
About the International Entrepreneurship Summer School
The International Entrepreneurship Summer School 2023 (IESS23) is organized by the Entrepreneurship Hub of the Technical University of Braunschweig and the Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences. It focuses on imparting entrepreneurial skills and their practical application.
This event series provides international participants with insights into the German start-up ecosystem and practical training for those considering entering this system. The International Entrepreneurship program is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action as well as the State of Lower Saxony.”
As part of the “Technology Business Model Creation (TBMC)” seminar, student teams develop business models for existing, groundbreaking research projects at TU Braunschweig. This year’s final event of the seminar took place on July 21, where two teams were awarded for their outstanding work.
One of the winning teams, consisting of students Katharina Wolf, Melina Maßmann, Marvin Paul and Nils Rayczik, developed a complex business model for Dr. Ingrid Schall’s research activities. Dr. Ingrid Schall, a visiting scientist at the TU Institute for Semiconductor Technology, developed a completely new approach to the production of crystalline silicon. With the help of this methodology, it has been possible to enable a production process for solar cells that is independent of foreign imports and requires less energy. The innovative process has now been internationally patented.
Students Kevin Gronemeyer and Lennart Hüsken made up the second team to receive an award at the closing ceremony. They convinced with a business model for a Screening and Registration Terminal for hospitals. The Screening and Registration Terminal is a contactless plug-and-play solution with the goal of reducing hospital workload and improving infection control through (partial) automation. The research project is the brainchild of Steven Hahnemann. At the Institute for Industrial Construction and Structural Design at the Technical University of Braunschweig, his research includes healthcare construction and digital design in the field of VR (virtual reality) and AR (augmented reality/mixed reality).
This year’s expert jury included Britta Kokemper-Söllner (member of the management board) and Klaus Lange (board member and business angel) from the Business Angel Netzwerk Süd Ost Niedersachsen – Banson e.V.
About TBMC:
The seminar is offered by the Entrepreneurship Hub of TU Braunschweig and Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences. Participating students learn on the basis of real research projects how scientific and technological research results can be transferred into a suitable and marketable business model. The students deal with real applicable technologies of the TU Braunschweig, so that the elaborated work results can ideally be further used after the seminar and create a real added value for the market launch. The goal of the event is to take advantage of the great opportunities our region offers for high-tech start-ups and to promote start-ups in this field. The Technology Business Model Creation (TBMC) course is held annually in the summer semester.
From the 3rd to the 13th of June 2023, students and researchers from India were guests in Braunschweig, taking part in our Indo-German High-Tech Start-up Camp.
During the camp, the participants were able to develop their entrepreneurial skills with the support of coaches from the Entrepreneurship Hub and take part in entrepreneurship-related workshops. They also learned about Braunschweig as a research and start-up location and the opportunities this region has to offer for innovative start-ups.
As part of the impressive camp programme, the participants visited W.IN, Salzgitter AG, BRICS, OHLF, the Autostadt in Wolfsburg, the NFF, the Braunschweig Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the three participating universities TU Braunschweig, Ostfalia and Leibniz Universität Hannover.
We would like to thank the participants for their visit and the inspiring exchange. We wish everyone a safe journey home and hope to see you again at our International Entrepreneurship Summer School.
For one week, students from Technische Universität Braunschweig and Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences worked on creative business ideas as part of the Entrepreneurship Spring School. They were given a comprehensive insight into the topic of entrepreneurship and start-up culture. On 24 February, seven teams presented their business models, of which the best ideas were awarded prizes. Many of the student teams placed a special focus on the topic of sustainability in their ideas. The business ideas presented included, among others, a concept for vending machines with healthy quark dishes, a water turbine that generates energy from rainwater, a concept for the simple measurement of rooms and a business model to bring discarded clothing back into the fashion cycle.
An important part of the Entrepreneurship Spring School is the imparting of knowledge in start-up-relevant areas such as leadership, marketing, negotiation techniques, raising capital, finding investors and business model innovation.
The participants learned first-hand from the practical expertise of founders and entrepreneurs, which went far beyond pure technical knowledge, and thus gained important insights into the start-up ecosystem. This year, the three Braunschweig start-ups Aeon Robotics, BeSu.Solutions and Foqus spoke to the students about their start-up process and gave important tips for their own start-up. In addition, relevant players from the regional start-up ecosystem were invited to give important impulses in expert presentations. They included Richard Borek and Simona Westhoven from borek.digital of the Richard Borek Unternehmensgruppe, Mathias Siemann from Siemann Personalentwicklung & Beratung UG, Britta Kokemper-Söllner and Constanze Geishauser from the Business Angel Netzwerk Banson e.V and Dr Ralf Koch from Salzgitter AG.
Three innovative business ideas were honoured by the expert panel
At the final event, all teams presented their business models and impressed the panel of judges with their diverse ideas. This expert panel presented awards to three particularly convincing business models.
First place went to the team with the idea for a “QUARK-O-MAT”. With a vending machine concept for healthy and protein-rich quark dishes for on the go, they were able to stand out positively at the pitch event and even provided the panel of judges with a first prototype for the delicious end product. Second place went to a business model for a water turbine that – installed in rain gutters – is also intended to enable private individuals to produce energy from their own rainwater. The third-placed team is pursuing the goal of using sensors to make it possible to measure rooms with millimetre precision, quickly and easily, even for laypeople.
The panel of judges included Stephanie Reimann (Head of Global Venturing & Startup Cooperation at Volkswagen AG), Richard Borek (Richard Borek Unternehmensgruppe), Dr. Michael Goldapp (founder of the company LINEAS, mentor and business angel at Banson e.V.) and Professor Dr. Reza Asghari (Head of the Entrepreneurship Hub). The prizes were sponsored by the Richard Borek Unternehmensgruppe.

The Braunschweig-Wolfsburg region will set up an innovative high-tech incubator for mobility start-ups under the leadership of Technische Universität Braunschweig. 4.7 million euros have been allocated for this purpose. On 4 October, Stefan Muhle, State Secretary in Lower Saxony’s Ministry of Economics, Labour, Transport and Digitalisation, handed over the grant notification at the Automotive Research Centre Niedersachsen (NFF).
TU Braunschweig and research institutions in the region are ideal places for spin-off companies. Now the start-up activities can be further strengthened – with an incubator or accelerator and project financing. To this end, Technische Universität Braunschweig has received a funding commitment from the Lower Saxony Ministry of Economics, Labour, Transport and Digitalisation for the establishment and operation of its own high-tech incubator or accelerator in the field of smart mobility (HTIA Smart Mobility). “Smart mobility” here includes not only mobility in the narrower sense, but also intelligent information and communication technology, which is essential for connecting transport systems.
An incubator serves to support start-ups in their initial phase to shape and implement their business model. Until the start-up has become independent as a company, it serves as a financier and mentor. The incubator also assists in finding premises and transport. The accelerator aims to accelerate the growth of young start-ups. In a pre-selection process, 14 young companies with innovative ideas have already been able to prove themselves as funding candidates. The funding projects are organised by the Entrepreneurship Hub of TU Braunschweig and Ostfalia.
“The fact that HTIA Smart Mobility can now take off is an honour and shows that our university’s focus on mobility has proven very successful and that the joint strategy for knowledge and technology transfer of TU, Ostfalia and the research region offers a lot of potential and complements it perfectly,” says Prof. Angela Ittel, President of TU Braunschweig.
Minister of Economics Dr Bernd Althusmann: “The Braunschweig-Wolfsburg region is a powerful hub for multimodal transport concepts – and one with international appeal. For road, for rail and for air – research is being carried out here in all areas. Solutions for the mobility challenges of our time are found in the region. With Volkswagen, the Braunschweig Research Airport and the Open Hybrid Lab Factory, we already have a heavyweight cluster. It is not for nothing that the outstanding test field for autonomous driving has been placed here in this region. The Smart Mobility high-tech incubator will also succeed in retaining young talent with their dynamic start-ups even better and in creating added value for all of Lower Saxony.”
“The HTI programme is a very important milestone in the entrepreneurship funding of Lower Saxony, where specifically the high-tech start-ups from the universities and research institutions are supported. This makes a major contribution to the sustainable competitiveness of the economy in Lower Saxony and Germany,” says Professor Reza Asghari, Head of the Entrepreneurship Hub.
Professor Thomas Vietor, NFF Board Spokesperson: “With the NFF and the OHLF, we can offer start-ups locations with outstanding research infrastructure and networking opportunities in the field of mobility to develop their high-tech business ideas. The HTIA Smart Mobility thus closes a gap in the funding landscape. Both young companies and the region will be supported in the long term.”
The funding is granted as a non-repayable grant and consists of two parts: Firstly, a grant for the implementation of the structure and operation of the HTIA of up to 2 million euros and secondly, start-up project funding totalling up to 3 million euros.
Fourteen start-ups and young companies that have recently been founded or are in part about to be founded have already been determined in a selection process by a jury of experts. All start-ups receive a grant of 2,000 euros per co-founder per month (if they have completed their studies or 1,000 euros if they have completed their vocational training) for a period of ten months. In addition, there are financial grants amounting to 100,000 euros in incubation and a maximum of 200,000 euros in acceleration. The HTIA -Incubator and Accelerator of the Entrepreneurship Hub of TU Braunschweig and Ostfalia also offers a variety of qualifying support services, as well as individual mentoring and coaching.
HTIA was initiated by a consortium consisting of the Entrepreneurship Hub (ESH) of TU Braunschweig and Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences, the Automotive Research Centre Niedersachsen (NFF), the Open Hybrid LabFactory e.V. (OHLF) and the Innovationsgesellschaft Technische Universität Braunschweig mbH (iTUBS).
